What the Nifty 50 Heatmap Shows

Three core signals in one view — no need to read through 50 rows of data.

Market Cap Sizing

Larger boxes = larger market capitalisation. Reliance, TCS, HDFC Bank dominate — their moves drive the index.

Colour-Coded Performance

Deep green = strong gain (+3%), deep red = heavy fall (-3%). Instantly spot sector-wide moves or individual stock outliers.

Sector Clustering

Related stocks appear grouped together, making it easy to spot sector rotation — when banking stocks fall while pharma rises, it shows immediately.

How the Heatmap Data Works

Under the hood — data sources, algorithms, and update schedule.

How the Nifty 50 Heatmap Works

Data is sourced from NSE via StockViz's daily data pipeline, which pulls official end-of-day market data after trading hours close each day.

Boxes are sized using the D3.js treemap squarify algorithm with each company's market capitalisation as the weight. Squarify minimises the aspect ratio of rectangles, producing readable boxes rather than long thin slivers.

The colour scale maps -3% to +3% daily change across a red-neutral-green gradient. Stocks beyond ±3% hit the maximum colour intensity. This range is calibrated for typical Indian market volatility — most days, the full colour spectrum is visible without everything appearing uniformly dark red or dark green.

The heatmap is updated once daily after market hours, typically available by 5–7 PM IST. It reflects closing prices, not intraday snapshots.

The 50 stocks displayed are the official Nifty 50 constituents as of 2026. When NSE updates the index composition (typically in March and September), StockViz updates the heatmap constituents accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Nifty 50 heatmap.

A stock market heatmap is a data visualisation that displays a collection of stocks as a grid of colour-coded rectangles. Each rectangle represents one stock, with its size proportional to the company's market capitalisation and its colour indicating performance (typically green for gains, red for losses). Heatmaps let investors see the entire market or an index at a glance, without scrolling through lists of numbers. The Nifty 50 heatmap shows all 50 index constituents simultaneously, making it possible to assess market breadth and sector trends in seconds.
A Nifty 50 price chart (candlestick or line chart) shows the index value over time — one number representing all 50 stocks combined. The heatmap shows all 50 stocks simultaneously in a single view, revealing the internal composition of the index move. Example: the Nifty 50 may be up 0.5% overall, but the heatmap might reveal that 35 stocks are actually red while 5 large-cap stocks (Reliance, TCS, HDFC) are strongly green — a far weaker market than the headline number suggests. This is what makes heatmaps indispensable for market analysis.
Box size is proportional to market capitalisation (free-float). As of 2026, the largest boxes belong to: Reliance Industries (largest market cap in India, ~₹18–20 lakh crore), TCS, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys, Bharti Airtel, ITC, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Larsen & Toubro. These top 10 stocks collectively account for roughly 55–60% of Nifty 50's total weight, which is why their moves have an outsized impact on the index.
Market breadth from the heatmap: if 35+ of 50 stocks are green, it's a broad-based rally — genuinely positive. If only 10–15 stocks are green but the index is up, it's a narrow, large-cap-driven rally — less healthy. If heavyweights like Reliance, TCS, HDFC are all deep red, expect a significant index fall regardless of smaller stocks. Sector clusters in the same colour indicate sector rotation — banks moving uniformly red while pharma goes green suggests FIIs are selling financials and buying defensives. This information is invisible from just looking at the Nifty 50 number.
StockViz offers a clean, distraction-free heatmap without news tickers, banner ads, or login walls. The treemap layout (squarify algorithm) gives proportionally accurate sizing to market cap differences — larger companies genuinely have larger boxes. The colour scale is calibrated for ±3% daily moves, making typical market days readable without everything appearing either deep red or deep green. There's no paywall, no app required, and it works on mobile. StockViz also pairs the heatmap with a Market Mood Meter, advance/decline stats, and links to the 700+ stock bubble chart.
The heatmap is an overview tool, not a stock-picking tool. It's best used for: identifying sector-wide trends (entire banking sector red = watch for RBI news or credit event); spotting outliers (one pharma stock dark green when peers are red = check for company-specific news); market breadth check (40+ green stocks = strong rally worth participating in vs 10 green = narrow, caution warranted); momentum surfing (stocks holding green for multiple consecutive days = relative strength).
